Service Overview

## What This Work InvolvesAnd Who It Is For
Plenty of homes are perfectly manageable inside and impossible to leave. A loose paving slab, a steep front path, a kerb with nowhere to cross and no light after four o'clock in winter will keep somebody indoors just as effectively as a flight of stairs.

External access work fixes the route from the pavement or the parking space to the front door, and the route from the back door into the garden. Firm, even surfaces laid to fall, ramps at a usable gradient, handrails to both sides of steps, and lighting that comes on where people actually walk.

Outside work has to survive weather and use. Bases are dug and compacted properly, drainage is thought about before the surface goes down, and rails are set into concrete or fixed into sound masonry rather than bolted to a rendered face.

The garden matters too. Being able to get out to a patio, a raised bed or a seat in the sun is part of living at home rather than just staying in it.

### Who It's For

- Anyone who avoids going out because of the path, the steps or the kerb
- Wheelchair and scooter users who need a firm route and somewhere to park
- People who have stopped using the garden they used to enjoy
- Households where the outside route is unusable in the dark or the wet
- Carers and visitors who need safe access to the doorBook a Free Assessment

How We Support You

## The Care We PutInto Every Detail

### Getting out on your own terms
A firm, level route means going outside stops being something that has to be planned with help.

### Usable in the dark and the wet
Falls laid for drainage and lighting on the route, because most outdoor falls happen in poor weather or poor light.

### Handrails that hold
Rails set into concrete or fixed into sound masonry, at a height that suits the person using them.

### The garden back in use
Paths and level areas that make a seat in the sun reachable again.

Our Process

## How We Take ThisFrom Call To Completion

01
### Site visit
We walk the outside route with you, check levels, surfaces, drainage and where a vehicle can actually stop.

02
### Scheme and written estimate
What is dug out, what is laid, gradients, rails, lighting and the cost, set out clearly.

03
### Groundworks
Excavation, compacted sub-base and drainage set out before any surface is laid.

04
### Ramps and steps
Ramps built to a usable gradient with landings; steps rebuilt to consistent risings where needed.

05
### Surfaces and rails
Slip-resistant surfaces laid to fall, handrails and edge protection fitted.

06
### Lighting and check
Outdoor lighting installed on the route, then we walk it with you, at night if that is when it matters.

Benefits

## What You GetOnce The Work Is Done

### Firm underfoot
No rocking slabs, no soft ground, no puddles sitting across the route.

### Sensible gradients
Ramps a person can manage, with level landings where the run is long.

### Somewhere to park
Dropped kerbs and driveways so a car or a transport vehicle can stop close to the door.

### Two-handed support
Handrails to both sides of external steps, continued past the top and bottom.

### Light where it is needed
Lighting on the walking route, at the steps and at the door, not just a lamp over the porch.

### Built to last
Proper bases and drainage so the work still performs in five winters' time.

In Detail

## Materials, MethodsAnd The Situations They Suit

### Paths, driveways and dropped kerbs
A good access path is wide enough for a chair and a person alongside, firm, even and laid to a slight fall so water runs off rather than sitting in a low spot that freezes.

Driveways and hardstandings give somewhere to stop and transfer out of the weather. Where a crossover is needed, a dropped kerb is a highway matter, and we will explain what the local authority requires before you commit to anything.

Surfaces are chosen for grip when wet. Smooth, polished finishes look attractive in a brochure and become skating rinks in November, so we specify textured, slip-resistant materials in the places people walk.

### Ramps, steps, rails and lighting
External ramps are set out to a gradient the person can actually manage, with a level landing at the door so the handle can be reached while stationary, and an upstand at the open edge.

Where steps are kept, they are rebuilt to consistent rise and going, given a contrasting nosing, and fitted with handrails to both sides that continue beyond the first and last step.

Lighting is the cheapest safety improvement outside. Light on the path surface rather than in people's eyes, motion sensing at the door, and a switch at both ends of the route where it is used at night.
