Service Overview

## What This Work InvolvesAnd Who It Is For
Access is a chain. A perfect ramp is no use if the front door is too narrow, and a widened door helps nobody if the path to it is uneven. We survey the whole journey, from the gate or the parking space to the rooms inside, and rebuild the parts that break it.

That usually means a combination of things: a ramp or level threshold at the entrance, a door opening widened to give real clearance with room to turn on both sides, thresholds taken out inside the house, and a firm, even path outside that works in the wet as well as on a dry afternoon.

Widening a doorway is building work. Where the wall is load-bearing the opening is formed with a correctly sized lintel and proper bearings, then plastered, trimmed and decorated so it looks original. Ramps are set to a usable gradient with landings, handrails and a slip-resistant surface, not built as steeply as the space allows.

We start with a free visit so the whole route can be measured, including the turns, which are where most wheelchair access actually fails.

How We Support You

## The Care We PutInto Every Detail

### The whole route considered
Gate, path, threshold, door and the turn inside are measured together, so nothing is left as the weak link.

### Real clearance, not nominal
Openings are set out for the chair that will actually pass through, with space for the approach angle.

### Usable gradients
Ramps are built to a gradient someone can self-propel or be pushed up, with landings where they are needed.

### Structural work done properly
Load-bearing openings are formed with calculated lintels and finished so they look like they were always there.

Our Process

## How We Take ThisFrom Call To Completion

01
### Route survey
We walk the journey with you, measuring widths, turns, levels, surfaces and the approach to every door.

02
### Scheme and written estimate
A clear scope: which openings widen, where the ramp lands, what happens to the path, and the cost.

03
### Groundworks and structure
Bases, ramps, lintels and openings formed, with support in place before anything is cut.

04
### Doors and thresholds
Doors hung or replaced, thresholds levelled or weather-sealed level, floors made continuous.

05
### Surfaces and handrails
Slip-resistant surfaces laid, handrails fitted to both sides where required, edges protected.

06
### Trial run
We test the route with the actual chair or frame, not a tape measure, and adjust what needs adjusting.

Benefits

## What You GetOnce The Work Is Done

### Coming and going independently
The front door stops being something that needs arranging in advance.

### Turns that work
Clearance either side of an opening, which is what decides whether a doorway is really usable.

### Level inside
Internal thresholds and changes in floor level removed so nothing catches a castor.

### Weatherproof detailing
Level thresholds detailed to keep water out as well as let a chair through.

### Firm ground outside
Paths laid to fall correctly so they drain and stay usable in winter.

### Looks like the house
Widened openings plastered, trimmed and decorated rather than left obviously altered.

In Detail

## Materials, MethodsAnd The Situations They Suit

### Door widening and internal thresholds
A standard internal door is usually the pinch point in a house. Widening it means forming a bigger structural opening, moving the frame, and often relocating a light switch or radiator that sits in the way of the new approach.

Clearance matters more than the leaf width alone. A chair approaching at an angle needs space in front of the door on both sides, so we look at the corridor and the furniture as part of the same decision.

Internally, strip thresholds, carpet bars and small changes in level between rooms are removed or ramped, and floor finishes are run through so the whole ground floor becomes one continuous surface.

### Ramps, entrances and pathways
Ramps are set out to a gradient that can be managed, with level landings at the top and, where the run is long, part-way along. Handrails to both sides, an edge upstand and a slip-resistant surface are part of the design, not extras.

Where the level difference is small, a level threshold with a drained channel is neater and easier to use than a ramp, and we detail it so it keeps the weather out.

Outside, paths are relaid firm and even, laid to fall for drainage, with a route wide enough for a chair and a person walking alongside. Lighting the route is a small cost that makes a large difference after dark.
